A History of

Piccini

Angiolo Piccini was born in 1860 as the only son of a family of merchants, in Poggibonsi; a small town at the crossroads between Florence and Siena

In 1882, he invested in 7 ha of vineyards in Castellina in Chianti, built a small winery in Poggibonsi and started the family company that continues on today.

Angiolo Piccini was an inspiration for his son, Mario whom he groomed to take over the family business further on. Mario built a new winery by the newly inaugurated train station of Poggibonsi – by opening a direct distribution route of his wines in Italy, but especially to Linorno, the new trading port to America and Australia – The first export markets of Piccini Chianti.

Second Generation

After the death of Mario Piccini in 1963, the management of the company passed to Pierangiolo Piccini and his wife Marcella Sammicheli (current President of Piccini1882) who continued to make dynamic changements within the company,  expanding the assortment of products and establishing a competitive price regime for prestigious wines – a company policy that is still promoted with great commitment today.

Third Generation

“This legacy is a privilege and, at the same time, a commitment on our part to continue writing the family history chapter after chapter, year after year, vintage after vintage, always looking to the future.”

Since 2004 Mario Piccini, the current CEO, has led the company together with his sisters Martina and Elisa. Today, Piccini1882 includes five niche farms of Italy, and its brand is classified as one of the most distinguished Tuscan brand in the world.

By virtue of its secular history, Piccini has always maintained a faithful line to its principles, that are firmly anchored in love for tradition and in spirit of initiative, looking towards the future. The range of corporate values is embodied in the orange label, a winning chance launched by Piccini in 2002.

The company ventured where others would not: transforming Chianti, one of the most conservative Italian wines, in to a young and dynamic wine, proving its capacity for innovation and continuous dynamism.

“With courage and determination we have taken one of the oldest, most traditional wines of Italy and made it contemporary, vibrant, original and international. The old and the new make a wonderful blend, and Chianti Piccini Orange has become the Chianti of the 21st Century.”
