Making wine is a complex and exacting task. It demands the right combination of weather, soil, quality grapes and winemaking ability to reach the height of excellence. Many regions around the world have vineyards producing wine, with Europe, North America, Chile, Argentina and Australia as the most popular and recognized red wine regions.

The modern varietal red wines we know all came from southern Europe. The Cabernets, Syrahs (Shiraz), Merlots, Beaujolais, Chiantis and all the other full-bodied and hearty red wines were born in the hillsides throughout France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece.

These winemaking countries were also seafaring nations. They introduced their wines to much of the rest of the world and instilled a love of wine that spread around the globe. The world began to experiment with growing red wine grapes in their own country. The countries that have similar soil and weather conditions of southern Europe. Today, these countries have attained a level of winemaking ability that more than equals southern Europe.
